Makers Church is a non-denominational community of Jesus followers in the vibrant, diverse, and creative neighborhood of North Park, San Diego. Our mission is to make on earth as it is in heaven by developing and commissioning followers of Jesus to love God and love others.
We’re in an exciting season of growth! Makers is currently undergoing a significant campus renovation that will expand our multi-use facilities and open new opportunities to serve our neighborhood through community events, gatherings, and partnerships. This role is positioned to grow alongside that vision.
THE ROLE
The Worship Director is the primary spiritual and creative leader for worship at Makers Church. You’ll shepherd the worship team, cultivate a culture of encounter with God, and collaborate closely with the pastoral team to craft services that are theologically grounded, artistically excellent, and accessible to the diverse community of North Park. This is not just a music job, it’s a leadership role rooted in discipleship and vision.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Worship Leadership
Lead Sunday morning worship gatherings with musical and spiritual attentiveness • Curate song selections that are theologically rich, culturally resonant, and accessible to both longtime believers and those new to faith
Collaborate with the pastoral team on service flow, series themes, and seasonal rhythms (Advent, Lent, Holy Week, Easter)
Create and maintain worship sets using Planning Center Online, including charts, audio files, and service notes
Lead congregational worship and liturgical moments in a way that creates space for genuine encounter not performance
Team Discipleship & Development
Recruit, develop, and shepherd a volunteer worship team of musicians and vocalists • Schedule and lead weekly or bi-weekly rehearsals that are both musically productive and spiritually formative
Invest in team members as people, not just musicians- cultivating community, growth, and shared mission
Build a volunteer pipeline and create an environment where new musicians feel welcomed and developed
Create and lead rhythms of spiritual formation within the team
Creative & Pastoral Collaboration
Partner with the pastoral team to align worship with preaching series, church calendar, and congregational needs
Collaborate with the Audio & Technical Director to ensure seamless integration of worship and production
Contribute to special services and events: worship nights, baptisms, holidays, community gatherings • Provide creative input on overall service design, including spoken liturgy, video, and visual elements • Represent worship ministry in pastoral and creative team meetings
Administration
Manage worship ministry budget, licensing (CCLI), and equipment needs
Maintain Planning Center Online with accurate rosters, schedules, and service orders • Communicate clearly and proactively with team members, tech team, and pastoral staff
TYPICAL WEEKLY SCHEDULE
Sundays: 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM (setup, sound check, services, teardown), including a once monthly staff meeting from 11:30-1:30 PM (1st Monday of each month)
Thursdays: 6:00 – 8:00 PM (worship rehearsal, as scheduled)
Midweek: 6~ hours flexible (planning, song selection, team communication, admin) • Special Events: As needed (worship nights, holiday services, baptisms, etc.)
Note: Additional hours for special events and major holidays (Christmas Eve, Easter) are compensated at standard hourly rate and coordinated in advance.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Spiritual & Personal
A personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ
Alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Makers Church
A pastoral heart- you see worship leadership as discipleship, not performance
Humble, collaborative spirit with the ability to receive and give feedback well
Deep conviction that worship is for the congregation, not the platform
Musical & Technical Skills
3+ years of worship leading experience in a church or ministry setting
Proficiency on at least one primary instrument (guitar, keys, or equivalent)
Ability to lead a band and communicate musical direction clearly in rehearsal and live settings • Working knowledge of Planning Center Online (or willingness to learn quickly)
Familiarity with CCLI licensing and song library management
Comfortable working within a live production environment alongside a tech team
Leadership & Relational Skills
Demonstrated ability to recruit, lead, and develop volunteer musicians and vocalists • Strong relational intelligence – you build trust and community naturally
Clear communicator who can give musical and spiritual direction under pressure • Organized and dependable in scheduling, planning, and follow-through
Thrives in collaborative, team-oriented environments
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience leading worship across diverse contexts – multiethnic, intergenerational, or liturgically varied • Desired but not required: Strong vocal ability and platform presence that invites participation rather than observation
Songwriting or original music experience
Ability to arrange or adapt songs for varying band configurations
Basic audio/production knowledge helpful but not required
